Before my daughter was born, I had the biggest room in the house to myself as my office/studio and to tell you the truth, I had a hard time being creative there. Once we found out we were expecting, I was a little worried about how I’d carve out space for me.
We slowly started transitioning that room into her nursery (it took me 8+ months to finish NOT counting the pregnancy) but we moved my desk to a small corner in the space bedroom. I told myself I didn’t need much space even though I consider myself a messy creative.
This little space was a launching point of Erin Cathleen Studio and in those newborn days, it gave me a space to go and be creative. Turns out, I don’t need a big space right now and it was a great decision. The lighting from the window is great and I can lookout and see Blue Mountain from my chair. Sure the rest of the room is full of non-art stuff like an exercise bike, pull-out couch and stored luggage but it suits me for this stage of life right now. I still paint at the dining room table when needed but it helps to have supplies out and at the ready when creativity strikes. I read that that helps, turns out it does. All this to say, if you want to start being creative, don’t let space be an issue. Let art and color take over your dining room table if you don’t have the space or find a small corner, thrift a desk, buy some cheap paints and get started.
